Workshop – Intensive Lab in three 3-hour sessions.

AI for Artists, Designers, and Creative Industries

The workshop explores how Artificial Intelligence can enrich creative practices with Machine Learning tools focused on images, motion, and sound.

This theoretical-practical workshop introduces various practices, emphasizing best practices centered on 'human in the loop' to generate meaningful content in different areas involving creative practices.

The workshop provides a laboratory environment where results are explored and evaluated through playful exercises. In AI Tools for Artists, Designers, and Creative Industries, emerging technologies are approached in relation to human creativity, considering AI (from a critical perspective centered on new materialisms, software studies, and cultural studies, while not losing sight of gender studies that provide innovative perspectives on data construction) and different Machine Learning models as 'intelligences' that generate within an ecosystem of multiple human and non-human agencies that shape the social and material world.

Target Audience:

  • Artists from all disciplines and media.
  • Students in art and design-related fields.
  • Individuals interested in gaining knowledge about artificial intelligence applied to creative industries.

Requirements:

No programming knowledge is required. Attendees should have a personal computer equipped with a webcam.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the history and approaches of artificial intelligence.
  • Explore how machines learn and mimic.
  • Apply machine learning to media and content generation.
  • Reflect on epistemology and systems theory in the context of art.
  • Analyze the interaction between AI and human thought.
  • Experiment with creative practices based on systems.
  • Acquire technical skills in Python and AI tools.
  • Create audiovisual and interactive projects.
  • Develop an interactive portfolio.

Program:

Day 1: Following the Problem: A Possible Map to Land (3 hrs)

  • Moment 1: Brief history of AI. Models/Approaches at play. Internet and Data. Machines that learn and mimic. From learning to generativity. Computational Creativity. Retrogression 1: Epistemology: Systems Theory, Systems Art, Conceptual Art, Generative Art.
  • Moment 2: The network as a new image of the world, a new image of thought. Human-machine coevolutions. Against the data-semanticization of life.
  • Moment 3: Systems art practice: a return to conceptual strategies.

Day 2: Laboratory Practices (3 hrs)

  • Introduction to algorithms for artists. First steps in Python. GPT programming in Python. Potential literature exercises. Non-creative writing exercises. Introduction to Stable Diffusion code. Image generation in a Python environment.
  • Introduction to motion practices using ml5.

Day 3: From Ghosts to Co-Pilots: New Collaborations (3 hrs)

  • Audiovisual and interactive practices: computer vision, runway, ml5.
  • Creating an interactive portfolio using HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Introduction to GitHub.
  • Closure and Evaluation.
  • Presentation and discussion of the projects developed.
  • Reflection on the application of AI in creative practices.

Materials:

Additional resources and guides will be provided during the course.

BIO:

Matías Barreto is a researcher-artist and educator whose interests revolve around morphogenesis and artistic creation as a result of collaborations between artists, technological artifacts, and systems of rules and artifacts. He has diverse training in Communication Sciences (UBA), New Media Arts and Interactivity (UNA, UNTREF), drawing, and painting (UTDT), and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Contemporary Artistic Practices (UNSAM). He specializes in designing and creating interactive environments that integrate new media, light, creative code, and traditional materials.

Passionate about sharing learning experiences, he is involved in the creation of production laboratories to explore the intersection of art and technology.
